Dear Student,
On behalf of the New York Xi Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, I commend your decision to attend the University of Rochester. With your enrollment you are eligible to apply for the annual Balanced Man Scholarship. Each year the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at University of Rochester presents the Balanced Man Scholarships to students exemplifying the Balanced Man ideal. The Balanced Man Scholarship is designed to recognize and reward those students who have significant accomplishments, proven leadership abilities, academic success and who are destined to continue this trend of excellence throughout their college career and beyond.
The Balanced Man Scholarship is a set of awards given to incoming male freshmen who exemplify the principle of the Sound Mind and Sound Body that members of Sigma Phi Epsilon aspire to. Specific criteria for consideration include but are not limited to academic success, athletic involvement, leadership capacity, extracurricular activities, and community service involvement. I would like to make it clear that the recipients of these awards are in no way obligated to join Sigma Phi Epsilon. Freshman year can bring a lot of unexpected small yet unavoidable costs of college attendance: textbooks, supplies, manuals, equipment, dormitory accessories, etc. The first place winner will receive $500.00, with second and third place winners receiving $250.00, to be used towards tuition, books, and other supplies.
The application process is broken into three parts. Part one and two consist of the application and essay part respectively. The application part is designed for us to become familiar with the accomplishments and successes you have experienced thus far that have paved the road, enabling you to be here. The essay is designed for applicants to be able to reflect upon themselves and to allow us to get to know you a little more personally. The final part consists of a one-on-one interview where you will speak on your own behalf explaining why you should be chosen as a 2011 Balanced Man Scholar. Meeting in person gives us a better opportunity to communicate your ideas as well as to get to know you better.
Applicants are not obligated to join Sigma Phi Epsilon in order to win this award. We simply want to reward those men who exemplify the Balanced Man way of life – one that promotes success in men as Scholars, Athletes, Leaders, and Gentlemen. The concept of the Balanced Man challenges our members to excel in academics, leadership, and community involvement with the ultimate goal of becoming the future leaders of America. Applying the ideal of the Balanced Man philosophy as a guidepost, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon consistently surpass the all campus GPA, are among the most active students on campus, and excel in intramurals. We expect that those individuals who are chosen to receive this award will continue to foster the Balanced Man ideals through their involvement in the University community and will apply themselves to their fullest in the classroom, the athletic field, extracurricular activities, and service.
In order to qualify, the applicant must be registered as a full-time student at the University of Rochester. The application will be available online and is due no later than November 10, 2011. Completed applications can be emailed to nyxibms@gmail.com or delivered to Eleanor Oi, in Lattimore 312 .
Thank you for taking the time to apply, and best of luck with your endeavors at the University of Rochester. Should you have any questions concerning the Balanced Man Scholarship or Sigma Phi Epsilon, please call me on my cell at 315.877.3583 or e-mail me at nyxibms@gmail.com.
